Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the different types of work and to examine how they are related with open innovation, either by carrying out relationships with companies or external agents, or through the outsourcing of qualified and creative work.

Design/methodology/approach

After the theoretical analysis of the different types of work, the empirical study uses qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) to analyze the different variables and their relations which favor open innovation.

Findings

The combination of the variables in the QCA makes it possible to obtain three paths among the characteristics of the qualified work and open innovation, with a positive empirical result. The general conclusion is that the motivation level of the qualified work is relevant for open innovation.

Research limitations/implications

The study has some limitations, notably the reliability of the measurement of the variables, based on the subjective assessment of the respondent employee. The limited number of cases is always a question to be considered, although the statistical results show consistency in the results.

Practical implications

The most important implication for practice is the relevant connection between the internal efficiency in the management of the different types of work and open innovation.

Originality/value

The originality and value of this paper consist in relating the internal efficiency in the work management with the effectiveness and success of open innovation.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between open innovation (OI) and radical and incremental innovation success in knowledge-based companies. The company’s human resources and organizational learning capability are considered as the fundamental nexus of this relationship.

Design/methodology/approach

At the conceptual level, the paper analyzes the relationships between dynamic capabilities and OI and between OI and innovation success. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) was used to study how innovation is implemented in 29 companies.

Findings

FsQCA identifies combinations of factors that facilitate incremental innovations. These combinations reveal the path to implementing company policies that enable incremental innovation and foster radical innovation.

Research limitations/implications

The nature of the study sample means that the findings should be generalized with precaution. The most valuable implication is the identification of combinations of factors that help companies manage innovation.

Originality/value

Scarce literature links organizational learning factors and OI to different types of innovation. The use of fsQCA to analyze the cases also marks a breakthrough in the innovation literature.

Abstract

Purpose

The health sector is increasingly dynamic and complex, in which (strategic) change has become a constant in the sector's adaptation to different challenges. This study aims to meet the need to understand which trends in the literature on strategic change in the health sector and which elements comprise it.

Design/methodology/approach

To advance research in this area, the authors systematically review 285 articles collected from the Scopus database. The authors conducted a bibliometric analysis using the VOSviewer software by applying the bibliographic matching method to understand how these articles were grouped and thus characterise the literature trends.

Findings

Through a systematic literature review (SLR), this study analyses the various lenses of literature on strategic change in the context of the health sector, classifying and conceptually mapping existing research into four thematic groups: key factors in strategic change, theories and models underlying strategic change, decentralisation in strategic change and the challenges to strategic change in this millennium.

Research limitations/implications

The trends in the literature on strategic change in the health sector explore strategic change from different perspectives. Key features in strategic change suffered reciprocal influence from the theories/models of strategic change and decentralisation of health care so that the health sector could define strategies to respond to the challenges it faced.

Originality/value

The health sector has been in great prominence worldwide, specifically due to the recent events that have occurred on a planetary scale. Therefore, a systematic review is essential to help understand the strategic changes that have occurred in the health sector and their impact. The authors did not find any SLR that focuses on global strategic changes in the health sector, so this study will fill this gap, systematising the main topics on strategic change in the health sector. The authors also suggest an integrative research framework and a future research agenda.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to provide interested parties with the means of grasping how the literature on open innovation has evolved over the course of time. In this way, the authors furthermore contribute towards a better understanding, scaling and positioning of this field of research.

Design/methodology/approach

This study applies a combination of bibliometric techniques, such as citations, co-citations and social network analysis in order to map the scientific domain of open innovation. Currently, bibliometric analysis represents a methodology in effect on a global scale to evaluate the existing state of fields of research (Mutschke et al., 2011). This spans the application of quantitative and statistical analysis to publications such as articles and their respective citations and serving to evaluate the performance of research through returning data on all of the activities ongoing in a scientific field with summaries of these data generating a broad perspective on the research activities and impacts, especially as regards the researchers, journals, countries and universities (Hawkins, 1977; Osareh, 1996; Thomsom Reuters, 2008).

Findings

This research aims to map and analyse the intellectual knowledge held on open innovation. To this end, the authors carried out a bibliometric study with recourse to co-citations. Based on cluster and factorial analyses, it is possible identify and classify the several theoretical perspectives on open innovation across six areas: open innovation concept, open innovation and networks, open innovation and knowledge, open Innovation, and innovation spillovers, open innovation management and open innovation and technology.

Originality/value

This paper aims to map and analyse the intellectual knowledge held on open innovation.

Purpose

Capital restrictions normally exist in the creation of a startup, requiring investors to analyze funding alternatives in a highly competitive climate. Although different types of incentives to support startups exist, these incentives are only available to those companies that fulfill the requirements of the funding program to which they have applied. Due to social and economic changes introduced by the digital economy, however, existing mechanisms for assessing the potential growth of startups are scarce, outdated or simply incomplete, distorting the results of such evaluations.

Design/methodology/approach

Evaluating business opportunities and how to exploit them are critical activities for an entrepreneur. This study sought to address this issue through the combined use of cognitive mapping and the Decision EXpert (DEX) technique. Assuming a constructivist stance, the study brought together a panel of experienced entrepreneurs and business investors to identify and articulate the criteria to be considered in the evaluation and classification of startups.

Findings

The evaluation system created in this study was tested, and the results were validated by the expert panel on a collective basis, demonstrating that the dual methodology used can increase our understanding of the decision problem at hand and lead to more informed and potentially better evaluations of the potential growth of startups.

Originality/value

The authors know of no prior work reporting the integrated use of cognitive mapping and DEX in this study context.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to identify the conceptual basis shared by different theories, regardless of the unit of analysis they specifically adopt. The different ontological choice (or different segment of reality studied by each theory) does not hinder conceptual common ground for a good number of organisational theories.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper highlights the importance of hierarchical, social and institutional relations and of the technological, cognitive, social and institutional contents. It looks at the common conceptual contents of the two main theories examined, and those of a wide set of other theories addressed here. Both of the theories examined are interpreted in terms of relations and contents, taking a closer look at the passageways and walls that exist between them.

Findings

Ontological and conceptual bases for the analysis of organisational theories are established.

Research limitations/implications

The proposal of a common background from which one can examine different organisational theories is, in principle, important. The limitation inherent is that, given the infinite nature of reality, in the material world and in the world of thought, no one can be sure of having proposed the best possible methodological basis.

Originality/value

Relations and contents, as a basis for analysing theories, is an innovative proposal that attempts to gain insights on the basic materials (ontological and conceptual) that go to make up theories. From this point, the path towards a higher order theory can be based on the fundamental aspects (the way in which they interpret reality) of the theories themselves, not by formulating more generalist concepts or constructs.

Many experts agree with the opinion that blockchain technology will bring about a revolution and create a new system of living, relating and doing business. What so far seems to be an experimental phenomenon, which is already producing results and creating high-value communities, may soon become a real social transformation. The case study presented here sheds some light on the blockchain reality, the importance of digital entrepreneurial talent, which seeks to take advantage of a situation in the country to develop a commercial project attractive to foreign investors.
